Frankenstein: Theme of The Other

One of the best comparing traits between Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and advanced society is the noticeable quality of appearance and acknowledgment in the public eye. All through cutting edge society and the general public depicted in Frankenstein, an individual is judged essentially on appearance. Social partialities are generally established from appearance, running from skin shading to weight. Discernments are then dependent on these biases. An individual will at that point demonstration a specific route towards the individual the partialities are dependent on. The equal drawn between the social orders is that they are very appearance-based, which is brought to the consideration conversely of the ugly beast and the regular person. The â€Å"Other† is an individual perceived by a network as not having a place, as being surprising in a basic way that separates from every other person in the gathering. The gathering or network considers itself to be its individuals as the standard and the individuals who vary from the standard, as the Other. Recognized as lacking principal attributes controlled by the gathering, the Other is normally consistently observed as lesser or second rate and rewarded subsequently. The gathering characterizing the Other might be a whole society, a social class, a network inside a general public, or even a neighborhood posse. (Melani 1) The Other isn't basically a numerical minority. In a nation or domain is over taken by a majestic force, the more various locals can turn into the Other, for example, the British guideline in India where the local Indians dwarfed the British 4,000 to 1. (Melani 1) Likewise, ladies are ordered and decided by men, the predominant gathering or people, in relationship to themselves, with the goal that they become the Other. Henceforth Aristotle states: â€Å"The female is a female by ethicalness of a specific absence of characteristics; we should view the female nature as burdened with a characteristic imperfection. † (Melani 1) The untouchable is a term that is generally mistaken for the Other, however they are not indistinguishable. The pariah may have the chance to be acknowledged by and consolidated into the gathering. The Other, in any case, is recognized as various in kind, as ailing in some major quality or characteristics separates the person from the gathering. Thusly the Other is bound everlastingly to stay isolated and forlorn, to perpetually stay outside of the gathering except if the group’s viewpoint is liable to change. (Melani 1) In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the animal, contradicted by his creator and dismissed by society, embodies otherness. Alongside the way that he fills in as an opposite case of regular generation, the beast has an amazingly twisted appearance bringing about serious detachment and inevitably prompting his unappeasable and unfeeling conduct. In Frankenstein, excellence is viewed as a temperance of good, while disfigurement and offensiveness are inevitably connected with detestable. In numerous occurrences, the monster’s horrendousness is compared with him being insidious. In the wake of escaping from the main sight of the cognizant beast, Victor states: â€Å"I ventured frightfully in: the loft was vacant, and my room was additionally liberated from its repulsive visitor. I could scarcely accept that so extraordinary a favorable luck could have come upon me, however when I became guaranteed that my adversary had in reality fled, I applauded for euphoria and got down to Clerval. (Shelley 52) Victor infers that in light of the fact that the beast, that he made, is frightful, he should be his foe. Indeed, even the maker of the monster neglects to give him one possibility at acknowledgment to society and the world. This topic just starts here. At the point when the beast stands up to the William, Victor’s most youthful sibling, William shouts: â€Å"'Let me go,' he cried; 'beast! Revolting villain! You wish to eat me and destroy me. You are a monstrosity. Release me, or I will tell my daddy. † (Shelley 144) The beast just faces further disconnection as not even the little fellow will allow him to be acknowledged before finishing up him a scoundrel. In any event, when the beast spares the life of a young lady suffocating in a stream, because of his appearance, he isn't remunerated, yet shot because of presumptions produced using due to his appearance. â€Å"This was then the award of my altruism! I had spared an individual from demolition, and as a reward I currently squirmed under the hopeless agony of an injury which broke the fragile living creature and bone. Aroused by torment, I promised everlasting disdain and retribution to all humankind. † (Shelley 143) The beast appears here that in any event, when seen carrying out something worth being thankful for, he is as yet dismissed by society and broadcasted shrewd, based off his outer highlights. The division of excellence and unpleasantness as identified with great and fiendishness come from the novel’s Romantic impacts. The beast in the long run understands his place on the planet. He starts to grasp his separation and position as the Other. When figuring out how to peruse, he starts to interpret Victor’s diary during the production of the beast: â€Å"Accursed maker! For what reason did you structure a beast so frightful that even YOU abandoned me in appall? God, in feel sorry for, made man lovely and charming, after his own picture; yet my structure is a soiled kind of yours, progressively shocking even from the very likeness. Satan had his partners, individual demons, to respect and empower him, yet I am lone and despised. † (Shelley 131) The beast, presently mindful that his own maker is frightened by his reality, turns out to be progressively anguished about his situation on the planet. â€Å"I am malevolent in light of the fact that I am hopeless. Am I not avoided and detested by all humankind? You, my maker, would destroy me and triumph, recollect that, and disclose to me why I should feel sorry for man more than he feels sorry for me? † (Shelley 147) The beast, deserted by his God and incapable to discover a spot on the planet, concedes here to Victor that his insensitive deeds were results of his grave destruction. The beast can't recognize his motivation of presence. â€Å"I was subject to none and identified with none. The way of my takeoff was free, and there was none to regret my demolition. My individual was repulsive and my height enormous. I don't get this' meaning? Who right? What right? These inquiries constantly repeated, yet I couldn't explain them. † (Shelley 141) Unable to comprehend his being, he addresses Victor on his motivation forever. For what reason would he say he was made to carry on with an existence of such unfathomable hopelessness? From the content, we can discover that one ought to never pass judgment on somebody by principally appearance yet by the substance of their character. Frankenstein had a cherishing and caring soul within his ugly outside. Tragically, Victor needed to become familiar with this exercise the most difficult way possible through the monster’s deplorable way of annihilation in his chase for vengeance. Others’ are as yet being recognized right up 'til today in present day society. Others today are being recognized by race, social class and even sexual direction. Insiders, or those seperate of the standard in the public eye, explicitly American culture, for the most part share uniform attributes, for example, inception of birth and accomplishment by financial terms. (Melani 1) The Others are the individuals who are either poor or who, here and there, don't share the general estimations of American culture. The equal that appealing individuals are bound to be acknowledged in the public eye comes from the impact from the media. The media mentions to society what is and what isn’t alluring. Amanda Grable composes on the grounds that man lives in the public arena and is seldom detached, man frames most of its thoughts of self dependent on correlations produced using outer boosts. (Grable 1) This outer boosts can be comprised of pictures of ones self in correlation of pictures of others. It is usually realized that the primary objective of most media is focused on promotion, or an approach to prevail upon clients to purchase their items. One of the widespread ways this is cultivated is through demonstrating pictures of alluring, cheerful individuals utilizing these items. An investigation of 4,294 system ads uncovered that 1 out of each 3. 8 advertisements send a â€Å"attractiveness message,† (Grable 2) With this reliance on mental self portrait, it’s hard not to perceive any reason why people rush to judge exclusively off of appearance. Individuals in the public arena are continually making sets of contrasts to separate between each other; from skin shading, weight or even design sense. Mental self portrait is the fundamental spine of society. Decisions are reliably being shown up by each part in the public arena. This is the equal drawn inside cutting edge society and the novel.

Top 10 Application Tips # 7 Fellowship Statement COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

Top 10 Application Tips # 7 Fellowship Statement COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog This is the seventh entry in our “Top 10? list to assist you with understanding the process of submitting your admission application to SIPA.   This entry is focused on advice regarding the section of the application entitled “Fellowship Statement.” Funding a graduate school education can be challenging and I will offer additional insight regarding financial aid in some future entries, the point of this entry is to provide guidance on the information that we ask for on the admission application. Question:   What do I need to do to be considered for a scholarship from SIPA? Answer: Every single person that applies to SIPA is considered for scholarship funding.   Thus, all you need to do to be considered is to complete the admission application. When an Admission Committee member reads the application and makes a decision, he or she can note that they wish for the candidate to be considered for scholarship from SIPA.   After all of our admission decisions are made the Committee then takes files that have been marked “consider for fellowship” and deliberates on who will be awarded funding. Question:   Are international students treated differently in the scholarship consideration process? Answer: No, all applicants are treated the same regardless of citizenship.   Scholarships are based on merit and we are looking for the best possible candidates for admission.   This may lead to the question . . . Question:   “What characteristics does a successful scholarship candidate possess? Candidates we typically award first year scholarships to “stand out” among the crowd so to speak.   You could say that along with academic and professional excellence, successful candidates possess a unique story, motivation, and/or drive backed by action that sets them apart from the rest of the pool of applicants. It might also be a candidate that overcame extreme obstacles to achieve success.   There is no formula or checklist that we use to nominate candidates for first year fellowship, we typically tell the Committee to identify the top 10-15% of files they read as worthy of scholarship consideration. The decision of who to award scholarships to is very difficult for a few reasons.   First, our applicant pools are extremely qualified each year.   Every admitted applicant possesses an impressive record of accomplishments matched by unique characteristics that the Committee believes will make a strong contribution to the admitted class. Second, the Committee is only able to award funding to approximately 10-15% of the admitted class.   SIPA reserves the majority of scholarship funding for second year students.   Not receiving a scholarship offer from SIPA as a newly admitted candidate should not be taken as a slight, it has more to do with the very accomplished pool of applicants and the limited amount of funding for the first year of study. Non-Columbia Fellowships SIPA does partner with several organizations to provide funding for admitted candidates.   In some cases we provide matching funding and in other cases we just wish to recognize the affiliation by granting our own scholarship to a candidate.   The organizations we partner with are listed in a drop down menu on the Fellowship Statement Page of the application.   See below for a picture: You may choose up to two organizations you either have an affiliation with or organizations you have submitted applications to for funding.   The process is competitive and we are often not able to award funding to everyone that has a relationship with an affiliated organization. For example we receive applications from many qualified alumni of the Peace Corps and we do set aside funding to recognize excellence during service in the Peace Corps, however with the large number of Peace Corps alumni applying we are unable to provide funding to every qualified candidate. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Timing U.S. citizens and permanent residents interested in receiving funding from the Federal Government should submit the FAFSA, but please do not do so prior to January 1st, 2011.   The 2011-2012 FAFSA will be needed and the Department of Education does not post the form online until the new year starts. Question:   What is meant by “head of household?” Answer: By head of household we mean that you are either entirely responsible for your own finances or that you are the main source of income in a family unit.   The family unit should not include your mother or father.   An example of head of household would be that live on your own or that you are married and have been earning 50.1% or more of the income for your household (which might or might not include children). Assets and Liabilities Sections The instructions are fairly clear on the site, please only enter your assets/liabilities and if married include those of your spouse.   Do not include parental information. Question:   Do I need to provide proof of the ability to pay for my education costs when I apply? Answer: No.   Admission decisions take into account merit only, not the ability to pay.   International students admitted to the program will have to provide proof of funding to have a visa issued, however this process does not take place until after an international candidate has been admitted and paid an enrollment deposit. Question:   Is the International Fellows Program (IFP) different from general SIPA scholarship funding? Answer: Yes.   Consideration for scholarship funding through the International Fellows program is different from general SIPA scholarships.   To apply, applicants must submit a 300 word statement about why they wish to be considered. It is not mandatory to apply for IFP funding, applying for IFP funding is optional and candidates who do not apply will not be viewed negatively.   For more information on the IFP program, please click here.

In â€Å"How Good People Make Tough Choices: Resolving the Dilemmas of Ethical Living,† author Rushworth M. Kidder defined ethics as: The capacity to recognize the nature of moral challenges and respond with a will tuned conscience. Counselors are continually faced with the realization that ethical decision-making is an evolutionary process that requires continual open mindedness and an ability to be self-critical. One such example is a client confessing to a counselor that he/she might be an adulterer or a kleptomaniac. Might be difficult for a counselor with deep seeded religious beliefs or very law-abiding to put aside his/her personal beliefs and treat the client’s issue. Dealing with the issue of adultery could also be problematic for a counselor who, in the past had been on the receiving end of an adulterous relationship. Debating Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply

Question: Describe about the Debating Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply? Answer: Introduction Oil price hike is a major concern for the developed as well as developing economies in todays globalised world. Oil is a very important resource for growing an economy, because it is used in almost every step towards development from agriculture to industry. The people of the economy are now more techs savvy. The crude oil to the refined one everything has its demand in different sector in the industry. So the change in the oil price highly affects the economic condition of the developed as well as developing one. If the price of oil increases, it influence the energy producing countries positively as their revenue increases by exporting that oil or the products in which oil is used as a major input. In case of oil importing countries it deteriorates, the conditions of the consumers as the hike in oil price cause an all over inflation in those economies (Ioannides, 2014). Overview Occurring inflation is quite obvious in such countries. Nowadays oil has become the root of the economies. Almost every industry from manufacturing to agricultural, from textile to transport industry the role of oil is inevitable in those businesses. If we consider the agricultural sector, we can see that the oil is used there as an energy resource for pumping, willowing. In the manufacturing sector from hard core machineries to textiles, to run the machines electricity is needed. In the transport sector to rn the vehicles energy is needed. So, all these things ultimately require the oil (Debating Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply: Introduction, 2010). Increase in Oil price also influences the food price. The cause of the food inflation is the increase of its production cost as well as transportation cost due to hike in oil price (Ito, 2010). Aggregate supply model The aggregate supply model mainly deals with the effect of change in the supply of output due to change of its price. The effect can be divided in to two ways as par the time span having been considered. One is short run and the other is long run effect. In the long run the aggregate supply curve is vertical but in the short run it is upward sloping. There are mainly four types of model: Sticky price, Sticky wage, Workers misperception, imperfect information. We can explain the fall or rise in oil price using any of these models. But as all these models are useful to picturise the issue of fall or hike in oil price, we can get the clearer picture if we consider the all these four models simultaneously. The relationship of the price of oil with its supply can be depicted as follows: Y= YNATURAL + a(P-PEXPECTED), Where YNATURAL is the natural rate of output produced when all the inputs are used at its normal rates, a is a constant which is greater than zero; P is the price level; PEXPECTED is the expected price level and the Y is the ultimate output level (Lawn, 2006). Research Methodology If we want to study it on one country in particular, at first we have to consider an oil exporting country as here we have consider the supply side of the economy and want to investigate how the economy will be affected if the price will change for the oil. If it falls, obviously the exporting countries will suffer from low revenue by exporting oil. The economic structure of the OPEC countries thus will readily be affected. The data has to be taken in the logarithmic form. The real GDP, national currency exchange rate for that particular country, the real price of oil in there and the total unemployment rate all these variables have to be taken under consideration (OIL PRICE REVIEW, 2010). Positive supply shock: an effective reduction in oil price What we notice in the above diagram that the fall of oil price causes the aggregate supply curve to shift to rightward. Previously the AS1 curve intersects the downward sloping AD1 curve at the point A. Now as the price of oil is reduced it causes to shift the AS curve to the new position AS2. The new equilibrium occurs at the position of B. What we can see in the diagram, is that at the new equilibrium point, price level falls so inflation decreases. Another point is that the output level or the real income level increases than that of the initial situation. The economic interpretation is that the economic development is observed while the real income increases. It accelerates the pace of the economic growth for that particular oil importing nation. Now as the enrgy sector is solely dependent upon the availability of the crude oil, its volatility as the factor cost severely affect the economy. Now as the price of oil falls as in this case, it opens up several employment opportunities. So, we can say that this positive supply shock can reduce the unemployment of Britain as an oil importing nation. But what we observe in the above diagram is that as the time passes the aggregate demand also tries to adjust with the new availability of aggregate supply. We can justify it by Says law. As par that law, supply creates its own demand. Somehow it has been followed here also. As the time passes, in the long run the aggregate demand curve also shifts downward to adjust with the change in the short run. The new equilibrium occurs at the point C. Adverse supply shock: a significant hike in oil price Since lowering, the price is a good thing to the middle class common people so the results of it will not be the major concern for the developing economy. They mainly suffer from the issue of going up the price level of oil.Through the aggregate demand and aggregate supply model here; we represent the situation of a Middle East economy with the light of impact of rise in the oil prices. The model is here being used to analyze what should be the key targets or economic policies to fight with the external shocks. The activity here has been designed to show the role of the aggregate demand and aggregate supply in this kind of situation of the economy. The model used is a simplified one. Models are used to compare the reality with a standard perfect situation (POSSO, 2012). It helps us to diagnose how far the real situation is from the ideal one. It gives the idea about the non-standard ceases also by changing the main variables. It can be checked by varying one or more than one variables, then what happens if the economy gets that kind of shock. It helps to predict the future situation and rectify the economy over time with the method of rational expectation (SHU, 2007). As we go on the deep of the problem, the model becomes more complex, as the availability of information diminishes. An increase in oil prices majorly affects the aggregate supply as the oil is such a product which is used in almost every industry. So hike in oil prices will cause increase in the price of the factor inputs which lie on the economy. So it will cause the aggregate supply schedule to shift rightward so that inflation increases than the initial situation (Steffy, 2011). What we can see in the above diagram is the real national income decreases with the shift of the AS curve to the new position. It is obvious, because as we have discussed earlier that the oil price hike causes the deterioration of the purchasing power of the common people. And here in this diagram fall in real national income refers to the same situation (Acemoglu, Finkelstein and Notowidigdo, 2009). The contraction in the aggregate supply lowers the real income causing a lower economic growth faced by the economy. Now low economic growth causes lack of employment as the prospect of future recruitment is very disappointing in the industry (Zhang et al., 2014). So in case of Britain what we notice in case of increase in oil price is the severe unemployment in the industrial economy, because of the dependency of the modern technology on the energy sector. The economic interpretation is very clear, as each industry is more or less dependent in the energy sector, so this external shock of significant oil price hike causes massive inflation resulting severe unemployment in every sector due to the fall in real national income from Y1 to Y2 (Sachs, 2011). Concluding remarks Here what we can see is that the oil shock severely affects the economic power of any country in the global perspective. The empirical research can be done here considering any of the OPEC countries and can be shown that the how the external shock affects the price level of the crude oil of that country and thereby causes to disbalance the economic structure. So, though change in price of oil externally is a short run phenomenon, still its impact is retained still in the long run. References Debating Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply: Introduction. Short Story and True Selves Essay Example

Short Story and True Selves Essay Authors use certain characters to attract and persuade certain audiences. The two short stories, The Prospector’s Trail by Cathy Jewison and Bluffing by Gail Helgason are easily comparable by the use of characterization. Both stories consist of two main characters, as couples, as it is affected by another individual. Also, throughout the stories, both couples face challenges in which reveal their true selves. Lastly, the author used one dynamic character while the other remained a static character. The Prospector’s Trail and Bluffing consisted of two main characters as it was affected by another individual. Norman and Jennifer from, The Prospector’s Trail, were happily married, until both their relationship and their financial funds started going downhill. Norman came to Yellowknife with his ambitious wife to make something of himself and Roy helped him do so. Jennifer doesn’t think much of Ray, and wasn’t fond of him or the way he dressed. â€Å"Unless I catch you wearing a red plaid flannel shirt, in which case I’ll leave you on the spot. † From this passage, it is clear that Jennifer was stereotyping Roy from not wanting Norman to become like him for the reason that he was wearing a red plaid flannel shirt during that time. As a result, Jennifer left Norman without even saying a word. In Bluffing, Gabriella and Liam went on a hike as they came across a bear in which showed how much they truly were uncommitted to one another. Liam ran off when he should’ve done something on the spot to keep Gabriella same from getting hurt from the bear. This occurrence completely changed the way Gabriella felt about Liam. Thus, these were how the two main characters were affected by another individual. Throughout the stories, both couples faced challenges in which revealed their true selves. In Prospector’s Trail, before going into Yellowknife, Norman lost his job and confidence from the formality and high expectations of his boss. He became clumsy where his reputation spread and could no longer work. In the following passage: Jennifer halfheartedly agreed to let Norman pursue his dream of opening and interpretive centre, on the condition that he did t far away from anyone they knew. We realize that Jennifer was ashamed and blinded by her pride, which ended up with her treating Norman wrongly. In Bluffing, when Liam ran away from both Gabriella and the bear, it shows that Liam was a coward and he didnt necessarily care about her. Furthermore, by the end of the story, Gabriella seems to also not care so much anymore. This is proven by the following passage: When the last bandage is removed, she pulls her chair closer to the bed and stretches her lips into a smile. She knows in her bones that she can manage this way, for the rest of the afternoon, at least. She still has that much bluffing in her. From this, it was clear that she was lying when she held his hand as the bandage was being taken off. It was obvious that she’d plan on leaving him due to the fact of him leaving her with the bear. Hence, these were how both couples faced challenges in which reveal their true selves. Lastly, the authors in both, The Prospector’s Trail and Bluffing used a dynamic character while the other remained a static character. Jennifer was portrayed as a selfish, inconsiderate, nagging wife who simply nagged about making Norman the best he could possibly be while Liam was portrayed as an unpredictable and a difficult person to understand. From beginning to end, Jennifer and Liam remained the same making them static characters. While on the other hand, Norman from the Prospectors Trail was portrayed as a young, confused, clumsy nerd but as time passed, he changed into a more open-minded, free man who  just wanted to start a new life in Yellowknife. This is proven by the following passage: You’re little lady’s not going to like it. She’s more upscale than my Elsie. â€Å"You’re right. She won’t see the potential. But like I said – this is the end of the road for me. † This shows that Norman wanted to be free from the stress Jennifer caused him, even if he were to be left behind. It was just Jennifer’s presence that was dragging him down to get to where he really wanted to be. In Bluffing, Gabriella changed from being committed and wanting to continue living with Liam to just simply leaving him and lying about how she felt about what had happened. Both Norman and Gabriella changed throughout the story, which made them dynamic characters while Jennifer and Liam remained the same, as a result of being static characters. By the use of characterization, the two stories are easily comparable. Both stories consisted of two main characters, as it was affected by another individual Also, throughout the stories, both couples faced challenges in which reveal their true selves. Lastly, the author used one dynamic character while the other remained a static character. Thus, these are the reasons why the characters from The Prospector’s Trail and Bluffing are very much similar.

His work consisted of claiming territories on the Black Seas and on the Baltic, in order to establish direct links with central and Western Europe to end Russia’s isolation. His government and social structure remained intact until the Revolution of 1917. His remarkable military victories and the nature and impact on his reforms raised a lot of controversy in his time. Peter the Great had a huge impact on the Russian society during and after his reign. Before, Russia was controlled by Mongolians. Overthrown by Ivan the Terrible, Russia was no longer under their oppression. When Peter the Great took the thrown, he wanted to break the isolation of Russia. He reformed society and westernized the culture after taking a trip to the West. Peter decided to take on â€Å"selective westernization† of his country. He changed financial and political ways, he controlled foreign and domestic trade, and he strengthened the military and changed society in general. He also transferred the capital of Russia to the new city of St. Petersburg, where he later died. This also symbolized the Western orientation of Peter’s reign. The reforms of Russia were not only designed to strengthen Russia as a nation, but strengthen his rule. Peter the Great made a lot of changes to Russia, for the better. His reign was known as â€Å"The Great Reformation†. His rule was absolute monarchy. Although Russia’s reformations were good, all the changes were in his eyes. Peter demanded total loyalty. He punished those whole feel into disfavor or suspected of disloyalty. Peter the Great actually had his own son tortured and killed because he suspected he was involved with a plot to repeal his reformations and cooperate with Russia’s foreign enemies. Not only did he have unjust accusations, but he forced upper-class to wear western styles. He brought down the power of the richer upper-class and gave opportunities to the lower-class; the upper-class was not pleased with this movement. Psychological criticism used towards the story The Strange Case of Dr Term Paper

Psychological criticism used towards the story The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde - Term Paper Example In her book Routledge Critical Thinkers: Sigmund Freud, Pamela Thurschwell dwells more deeply on the conception of the human psyche, that is, Freud’s iceberg metaphor. She explains the struggle between the Id, Ego and Superego in the following manner: a. Id: Basic needs - it is all about me. Not reality based. b. Ego: Reality based or alters reality to justify his actions. c. Superego: Social programming - what is acceptable for the character - morality and conscience. (81-83) This particular piece of fiction by Stevenson is most commonly associated with the rare mental condition often referred to as â€Å"split personality† disorder, where there exist two distinct personalities within the same person. This notion is also connected to the so called â€Å"doppelganger† motif, which represents a tangible double of a living person that typically represents evil, a notion which predates Freud’s concept of the repressed, unconscious alter ego. The doppelganger represents the narrator’s attempt to project an inner evil into the outside world, which is exactly the case with Jekyll. This idea has been widely used in literature, ranging from authors and works like Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Edgar Allan Poe’s â€Å"William Wilson,† Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s â€Å"The Double† and many others, whose protagonists find their identical nemesis in a psychological self-splitting process. This notion centers on the conception of humanity as dual in nature, even though the readers become fully aware of this in the last chapter, when the true story of Jekyll and Hyde emerges before them. Until the very end of the novella, these two characters seem nothing alike, and one can by no means make the connection between the well liked, respectable doctor Jekyll and the indescribably hideous and disfigured appearance of Hyde: â€Å"He is not easy to describe. There is something wrong with  his appearance; s omething displeasing, something downright detestable. I never saw a man I so disliked, and yet I scarce know why. He must be deformed somewhere; he gives a strong feeling of deformity, although I couldn’t specify the point. He’s an extraordinary-looking man, and yet I really can name nothing out of the way. No, sir; I can make no hand of it; I can’t describe him. And it’s not want of memory; for I declare I can see him this moment.† (Stevenson 12) When Enfield relates to Utterson how he watched Hyde trample a little girl underfoot. Utterson asks his friend to describe Hyde’s appearance, but Enfield, as the quote indicates, proves unable to formulate a clear portrait.  This lack of eloquence does not mean that he did not see him clearly. Quite the contrary, the image of Hyde is branded into his mind as he speaks, yet he fails to articulate Hyde’s ugliness and deformity. This creates the impression of Hyde as being almost intangible, m ysterious, beyond words, just as he is beyond morality and conscience. Viewed as an almost supernatural creation, he is not of this world, and correspondingly, he manages to evade the comprehensive faculties of human beings. He represents the evil

ERP Story-Part A - Case Study Example The business should consider the cost of implementing the new software installation and profitability of the undertaking. Merging the business has risks accompanied to it. Therefore, proper evaluation of returns and efficient running of activities is so important. The research found out that the problem associated with such step is the increase in the size of the organization, which means difficulty in tracking records and meeting operational costs. Business organizations vary in the operations they engage in order to satisfy human wants. The two main categories are service based, or commodity possessing and production. The finished product or service in these activities provides a platform for either satisfaction or dissatisfaction from customers. If customers are not happy, the organization engages in an evaluation process to determine where the problem sprouts from. This can be through assessing current equipment in production or performance evaluation as a whole. The corrective measure is then undertaken to retain the loyal customers. If the customers are satisfied, the management initiates ways to maintain the standards. As such, this paper will discuss ABC Company and how it seeks to obtain a market placement through merging of activities and improving technology. The size of a growing business organization instigates the type of technological equipment an organization should adapt in order to increase efficiency. Complex company structures will need large data storage facilities to enable the business store properly its information. In the case study, the current technological position of ABC cannot ensure good flow of information and communication. The new idea of creating merged type of business can be a solution to problems. Problems such as funds required for the project can be managed through pooling of resources from these different entities.

Should Combat Sports be Banned?

Should Combat Sports be Banned? 1. Should physical combat sports be banned? Ans: Introduction: Combat sports have been in existence in different forms for more than 2000 years. With high risks prevailing is such sports and the nature of aggression demonstrated on the sporting arena, ethical issues have come up whether in a modern civilized society there is a place of such activities. Measures have been adopted to minimise the risks to participants yet the demonstration of skills in such thrilling fashion has been under criticism. There are both bright and dark sides of these sports but whether to eliminate them or not is the major debate. Definition of Combat Sports: Combat sports may be defined as sports wherein two individual combatants fight each other using fighting techniques according to a set of prearranged rules. Competitors use different techniques in different forms of Combat Sports, but the objective of any contest is to subdue the opponent. The question arises here that is it ethical to allow such a sport where the main intension is to harm your opponent. The Dark Side of Combat Sports: The first thing that strikes into ones mind while saying about the dark sides of such sports is morality. 1. Morality: As said earlier, is it morally correct for one human being to attempt intentionally to harm the brain of the other as in boxing. It might be true that reckless tackles are made in sports like American football, Soccer, ice hockey etc and also body line bowling prevails in cricket which sometimes result in serious injuries but one does not win the game by doing so. Where as in physical combat sports one can win only by hurting the opponent and that too so seriously that the opponent cannot continue to take part in the game anymore. 2. Impact on society: The impact of such sports on the society can be viewed in two different ways. Combat sports practice: Evidence of unlicensed boxing events exist where violence has reached its extremities but it may be argued that a sport, which is explicitly a stimulation of actual combat and which has clearly defined boundaries is less of a threat to the social order than such evidences. Another issue evolved which argued if participation in a combat sport results in increase of violence and aggression in a human being. But different researches have shown increase in social and emotional awareness among the participants. Viewing Combat sports: The effect of excessive media exposure of combat sports does have a positive impulse of violence in some people but for the vast majority of the population exposure to aggression and violence as a passive spectator is considered to have negligible impact on peoples social behaviour. The Value of Combat Sports: Notwithstanding the violent nature of combat sports, â€Å"good† can be found in them just like any other sport. Any form of combat sport has the potential to improve physical health and well being. Higher physical competence and ability to defend ones own self can be considered as the positive side of combat sports. Combat sports can also acts as a medium of self-expression and human bonding. Contrary to popular belief, winning is not the sole objective of fighting contests. Value is given to what can be learnt from the opponent, be it in victory or defeat. Conclusion: Considering the fact that sport where the principal intent is to harm your opponent and with the high risk of fatalities and serious disabling injuries involved, the question arises both from the ethical and safety point of view as to whether or not combat sports be legally banned. In my opinion, before considering a legal ban and forcing the sport underground, each combat sport should be given the opportunity to review its rules for competition. For example, fighting within predetermined weight class, only one fight per night etc.

Economic Policies Of The Presidential Candidates Essay

The presidential election is coming just in the time when America is in desperate need to get out of many crises. Some of the apparent crises are the health reform crisis, the credit crisis and the political crisis generated by the war. Considering this background environmental condition, the coming election might be one of the most important events in the history of America and one that will decide the future of the country. In this paper however, I will focus on discussing the economic policies proposed by both presidential candidates. The discussion will focus on evaluating each of the candidates’ economic agenda and how they will affect the US economy in terms of growth (the supply side) and stability (the demand side). II. Thesis Statement Based on the news rails and publications regarding the economic agenda of the two candidates we can assess to a certain extent, the direction of each candidate. From my analysis, each of them has different approach on how to address the challenges faced by the nation. In the end of this paper I will provide a conclusion stating the different overall positions of both candidates and what benefits could come from each economic agenda. First however, I would make a thesis statement based on a quick glance over the available information in order to direct the course of this discussion. The thesis statement is: â€Å"Obama has an economic action plan that is aimed to affect the US economy in the form of improved living conditions for the middle class American workers in all aspects and thus generate economic stability, while McCain has an economic action plan that is aimed to affect US economy in the form of enhanced America’s competitiveness in businesses and thus create stronger macroeconomic growthâ€Å" III. Candidates on Economic Growth (the Supply Side) There are several perspectives of measuring the quality of a economic policy. In this paper, I am using two basic measurements of economic performance, which is economic growth and economic stability. Economic growth represents development of the supply side within the economy, which is represented by factors like productivity growth, capital accumulation and the supply of labor. Economic stability on the other hand, represents development of the demand side of the economy, which is represented by factors like inflation, demand for goods ands services, employment and price levels. Despite their nature of sometimes being a trade-off to each other, both are important economic indicators to ensure a prosper society. The lack of attention to any of those factors mentioned above will generate concerns and even protest from unsatisfied citizens of America. Thus, this paper is dedicated to evaluate the presidential candidates’ economic policies proposal within each and ever factors mentioned above. III. 1. John McCain on Economic Growth III. 1. 1 John McCain’s Agenda John McCain has confessed previously in one of his interviews that economy is not really his strong point. However, due to the presence of numerous professors as his economic advisors, it is not objective to judge the candidate from this statement alone. After a period of unclear statements regarding his economic agenda, John McCain has finally stepped-up confidently with a clear-cut economic agenda. His website reveals several sections consisting of actions under a title of ‘McCain Tax Cut Plan’. In the ‘Pro-growth Tax Policy’ section, McCain proposed the following actions: 1. Keep Tax Rates Low Under this action John McCain intends to fight the Democrats on their tax hike agenda and in the exact opposite of that plan, John McCain believes that there should be a reduction of taxes for the entrepreneurs of America. John McCain believes that small, medium and successful entrepreneurs are at the hearth of American innovation and therefore, should be protected by sound government policies. 2. Make It Harder to raise Taxes To support his commitment to maintain a low tax level, John McCain will strive to change the current legislation and suggested a new one, regulating that tax increases require at least 3/5 majority vote in Congress. 3. Cut Corporate Taxes Especially for corporations, John McCain suggested that a further tax reduction is important for US competitiveness. He believes that America was once a low-tax business environment, but later failed to keep pace as trade partners lower their rates. Thus, a tax deduction is appropriate to restore US competitiveness. 4. Rewards Savings, Investments and Risk-Taking John McCain believes that the reduction of tax will enable saving and further investment on innovation. Thus, it is imperative to maintain low taxes. 5. Allow First Year expensing of Equipment and Technology investment In order to boost investment in research and development, the government should allow corporations to expense their capital expenditures used for developing cutting edge technologies (‘John McCain’, 2008). III. 1. 2. Perceived Effects of the Agenda As elaborated, McCain’s economic agenda focused on his tax-cut plans. There are pros and cons regarding this action plan, especially regarding whether this tax cut plans will actually support economic growth. In theory, McCain’s agenda is in line with the general understanding on macro economic tendencies. Macroeconomic theories revealed that when taxes are low and entrepreneurship & innovation are supported by various legislations, there will be increased investment on business that will finally enhance the level of productivity of related businesses. This means that ‘in theory’, McCain has met the first criteria of economic growth, which is increased productivity. By lowering taxes on huge corporations, McCain will also allow these companies to enhance their capital accumulation process and generate business expansion faster than it would be otherwise. This means that ‘in theory’, McCain would have also met the ‘capital accumulation’ criteria. In terms of labor supply, McCain’s campaign website does not mention any effort of increasing the supply of labor for American industries. In his speeches and interviews on the other hand, the candidate has mentioned that his economic agenda will also include training programs for to increase the skills and capabilities of US labors and thus, enhanced their wages also. If these government training programs are truly a part of McCain’s action plan, than it the candidate had also ‘theoretically’ fulfilled the third factors, which is labor supply. Concerns however, are stated by economic observers. These observers stated that in the past 4 years, we have performed this strategy of providing entrepreneurs and corporations with supporting strategies, but the fact is, during the entire Bush’s administration, the amount of new jobs created is less than a year within the Clinton’s administration. Observers and writers also perceived that the corporate tax cut will enrich the already rich and done little for the middle class. This is quite in contrast to the current concerns throughout the United States toward increasing the quality of life for the middle class and the working class. Some perceived that this is only a clever strategy to get the support of powerful entrepreneurs in McCain’s campaign. Therefore, McCain’s idea of continuing this program (further protecting and supporting large corporations) does not impress most economic scholars and economic observers, but gain interest of the business sectors. Another concern is that McCain’s plan to increase labor supply is considered weak. This is due to the fact that American corporations are outsourcing their production activities overseas, due to the cheaper cost structure in foreign countries. Thus, supporting the large corporations with huge tax cuts will not guarantee that American labor will gain advantage over the growth generated by those tax cuts. Furthermore, with trainings that enhance American labor’s wage-rates, it will be less likely for American companies to use American labor in their production. These policies might have the potential of generating increased growth rates and innovation as promised, but even with the tax returns for workers families, the middle class will only gain a small portion, compare to the benefits gained by rich entrepreneurs.

Common Core Essay

The common core is a set of standards which were developed by state leaders along with teachers, school administrators and many other people, not the Federal Government. The common core has standards. Standards which are not curriculum. Standards that â€Å"do not tell principals how to run their schools, and they do not tell teachers how to teach. Local teachers, principals, and district administrators ultimately decide how the standards are to be met and the curriculum to be use† (Laine and Minnich). The school districts still have to choose which textbooks to use and, which curricula they wish to add and drop. The basic standards of the common core are: Aligned with college and workforce-training expectations; Rigorous in content and include the application of knowledge through higher-order skills; Built on strengths and lessons taken from state standards; Informed by standards in top-performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in the global economy a nd society; and Evidence-based, clear, and aligned across a child’s K-12 education. The common core has many pros and cons to reforming the education system. In the Article The common core is a change for the better the authors mention that the common core provides a good foundation on what needs to be taught (Gardner and Powell). The authors also touched on the fact that students nowadays are â€Å"more mobile than ever†, families have to move around more to follow and find available jobs. With the common core all across the Country have the same standards. There is some consistency within all schools in America. If a family was to move from Maine to Nevada, it would be quite impossible to expect things to be the exact same. However, you can still have an idea of the standards and know what to expect. This is a great thing about the Common Core. Every Student this way is exposed to the same standards. Once students are mingled together in colleges and universities across the country the professors can expect almost every student to be able to do the same things, to a degree. Not to say that every student knows the  exact same co ntent, however they will all have graduated high school with the same skills. Skills that may be taught in a variety of styles, none the less resulting in the same skills. The common core requires teachers to be very specific and hand out rubrics, stating exactly the quality of work that is expected. This eliminates the confusion that can arouse from complicated projects or open research topics. The students will know exactly what the teacher is requiring of them. Ultimately making it easier on the students to provide what the teacher wants and getting the highest grade possible if the students puts in the effort required to meet the expectations. Effort: defined as â€Å"an earnest or strenuous attempt† by dictionary.com, is where a problem arises in the common core. The common core standard â€Å"Rigorous in content and include the application of knowledge through higher-order skills† is asking 21st century students to put in lots of effort, they can’t ask Siri to write their English paper or do their history project. Most high school aged students in the United States are not going to put in the required effort to achieve rigorous assignments. I know that when I was in high school my attitude was ‘if I wait to the last minute it only takes a minute’. That’s not because I was swamped with assignments or didn’t understand it. It was because I would rather be doing anything else, after having spent all day in classrooms with new information being drilled into my head. The absolute last thing I wanted to do was go home and spend more hours on homework. Making high school more rigo rous is going to prevent kids from being kids. Students in the United States are less motivated to learn and value education less and less. Stephen Krashen says that another problem with very rigorous assignments is â€Å"CCSS are so demanding that in English language arts classes, educators and students will have little time for anything not directly linked to the standards† (Krashen). I do not quite agree with this statement because the standards are not the curriculum being taught, just the way it is being taught. Teachers and schools have some free space to spend as much time as they feel necessary to focus on aspects they feel more important. The common core has pros and cons, just like anything in life. One set of standards isn’t going to please everyone in the United States. My personal opinion is that the common core has good intentions, but may be a bit unrealistic. If every school in America was teaching the same skills to the same degree, all students would have the same experiences entering college. There are 50 states with thousands of different schools in each states. Within those thousands of schools there are teachers who all have their own style of teaching. Not to mention the millions of students that all learn a little differently at a different pace. What are the odds that every state school, and teacher are able to provide every student with the exact same skills, using the exact same standards? There are good intentions behind it, and the United States can give it a chance, but I feel as though it may be unrealistic. Feminism And Gender And Sexuality - 1378 Words

In the conversations about civil rights in America’s past, there is one minority that is often overlooked when considering the great achievements made in history. Women have become a powerful figure in society recently. In the past, women fought for their equal rights against all odds, starting the revolution with Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 1848 at a women’s conference in Seneca Falls, New York. Women realized they could fight for the rights they were entitled to, this notion sparked the concept of feminism. Simone De Beauvoir references women as the ‘second sex’, saying that â€Å"one is not born, but rather becomes a woman† (2382). By this statement, De Beauvoir argues that women are not born a women, but are taught from infancy to accept society’s role of ‘woman’. The idea that women are taught to accept their role by society is the concept that feminism fights. Historically, Feminism has evolved from the critical examination of inequality between men and women to focusing more on the social constructions of gender and sexuality. Feminism aims to closely examine gender inequalities and to effect change in areas where gender and sexuality politics cause social imbalances. Feminist political activists fight for reproductive rights for women, domestic violence, gay marriage, and issues within workplaces such as sexual harassment and discrimination. Any type of stereotyping, objectification, violation of human rights, and gender or sexuality based oppression are feminist issues.Show MoreRelatedHow Popular Fiction Reflects Debates About Gender and Sexuality: Feminism1278 Words   |  6 PagesIn this paper I will discuss to what extent popular fiction reflects debates about gender and sexuality.
